Emily P. Here's the deal...I grew up in West Texas...I have a mom that can cook some kickin'  tex-mex...I KNOW my tex-mex. It's a great thing when you can go eat some great tex-mex and not be charged like you're eating sushi! I can't stand to go to a mexican food restaurant and see double digits on all of the entrees...I mean, are you kidding? Mexican food is the cheapest food there is to make....that's part of why I love Texican cafe so much. They are not astronomically priced, and even though it's a good price, they don't skimp on your servings. Until our last visit, I had only ever tried their fajitas....(their fajitas for 1 are enough for 2 and only $9.95!!!! deal of the century.) Most places charge upwards of $11 (again, fajita meat is CHEAP...it's the left over stuff usually...not like they're cutting up NY strips)....and you don't get any meat, it's all vegetables. So, I commend Texican Cafe for not being cheap bastards and actually giving what we pay for. Next, I LOOOOOVE their chips and salsa....the queso (plain, haven't tried the kind with chorizo yet) is a little lacking, but if you throw some of their salsa in, you're good to go. They've got cheap, tasty dos equis on tap for $3 (that's better than some happy hour prices)....it just doesn't get any better than that. Oh, and did I mention they're RIGHT DOWN THE STREET from my apartment??? awesome.

Autumn C. I've been going to the Texican for about 17 yrs now and I still enjoy it. I took my husband there recently and we ordered the fried red jalapenos and a huge stuffed burrito which we split. There was no way we could of eaten it alone, the waitress luckily warned us instead of letting us over order. The burrito came out on two plates and both had sides. You never would of known it was a split dish. The burrito was stuffed w/beef fajita meat and was super yummy. The fried stuffed jalapenos were amazing and the dip they came with made them the perfect appetizer. Our waitress was super busy but kept our glasses filled and checked in regularly. The chips and salsa were tasty as well. The place was packed but luckily it has expanded to hold more ppl than it originally did when it first opened. If you decide to drop in, ask to be seated in Carries section, she was awesome!

James F. I am glad that someone also mentioned the stuffed jalapenos. THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!! My favorite entree is still the Orange Roughy. It has to be the biggest tex-mex seafood plate on the planet!! I have been eating at the Texican for over 10 years and the El Paso style variations of the dishes has won me over for life.

Peggy K. I had take-out from Texican with a group for lunch.  Since I wasn't the one placing or picking up the order,  I can't comment on the service other than to say it was speedy.  I ordered the two soft taco lunch special for $5.25.  Wow.  When I opened my lunch there were two enormous tacos and beans and rice.  I think the tortillas were at least 10 inches in diameter and were stuffed full.  What a bargain for $5.25!  I ended up only able to eat one, and it was tasty.  The beans were good, too.  My dining companions loved the salsa, but I was still too full from my lunch to try chips and salsa.  So, four stars for good food and not skimping on the lunch portions for the reduced lunch price.

Anne Marie B. Another one of those places I've been going to forever - 14 years I guess.  Consistently great salsa and queso.  The queso flameado is good but tricky to eat. The best enchiladas in Austin are here - the San Antonio Plate.  It's cheese enchiladas with carne guisada on top.  Damn damn good - perfect Tex Mex. The fajitas are good - a bit too much of the onion and bell pepper for me, but the grilled tomatoes are a nice touch.   Great guacamole, pico de gallo, tacos, charro beans, chalupas and more.   Amazing flour tortillas. Always very friendly service - a very traditional, homey South Austin joint.

Lin M. The stuffed jalepenos!  Hand breaded in a potato flour batter and stuffed with just the right amount of cream cheese, these babies are little spicy pockets of pure delight.   To make them even better, they are served with jalepeno jelly instead of the traditional ranch dressing-  Brilliant!  I now refuse to eat them from anywhere else.
My entree recommendation is the "award winning" cabrito.  It is extremely moist and falling off the bone tender.  The texture and comfort factor are very similar to my momma's pot roast.

Kathleen W. Yummy!!!  the salsa here is so good.  we ordered an appetizer, queso a la parilla.  it was so delicious.  it was white cheese with sauteed veggies served with tortillas.  for dinner i ordered spinach quesadillas and my husband ordered the burrito especial.  the portions were so big that we only took a few bites and boxed the rest up to take home.  it was still really good the next day for lunch.  we went on a friday night, so we waited around 20 minutes for a table, but that was not bad at all.  the service was great and the atmosphere was good!  the prices were good as well.  we will definitely be returning!

JC S. This is my favorite neighborhood Mexican restaurant, and it's one of Austin's best kept secrets (although folks down Manchaca way know all about it!) It's a big place, and the warmly painted walls and tiled surfaces give an authentic feel to its several dining rooms. There's a bar with a gigante TV for sports nuts (although it's damn smoky!), but we always eat in the dining room. I almost always get the Carne Chile Colorado, a delicious New Mexican style dish of tender chunks of pork in a flavor-packed, red chile sauce (not TOO hot). It comes with plenty of their homemade tortillas, which are the finest in South Austin, at least. Other times I'll order the Sour Cream Enchiladas, which are rich, comforting, creamy, cheesy chicken enchiladas. The Negro Modelo is always cold, and most of the time they'll bring a chilled mug. My daughter is crazy about the bean and cheese tacos, and she loves sitting in the booths because they have these cut-out dividers through which she can spy on other tables! If you're finding your way to Deep South Austin, as many of us have in the past couple of years, find your way down to the Texican. You'll be glad you did. If you're still into the bar scene, there's the Starlite pool hall right next door, and Giddyup's just down the street. Welcome to the hood!

John M. This place has great food. I have been goin here every since it was only one room and when cafe 1626 was hamburger hill. The chimichangas are great! I always have to take them home. Try the stuffed jalepenos. They are to die for with the jelly.

Todd J. Food comes out freakishly fast. Very good though...but it is like they knew what I was ordering before I sat down. I suspect jedi mind tricks.
